Sl vs. Rl

The objective of this photo expo is to represent how can SL interfere in our sub conscience – where’s the boarder between the game and our real life? In Sl we share emotions, we make friends, we get disillusions, we fall in love, we get hurt. SL is no longer a game when deals with our real emotions. The question i propose, is, if you have or haven’t lived yet that kind of emotions?
So, what i pretend with my photos it’s to connect the SL avatars, with scenes and situations from the real world, creating ambiences of tension, quietness and love.

All the pieces are for sale at a nice price, so, if you like any, feel free to take it.
If you would like a picture with your own avatar, that could be possible too, for that just contact Caty Matova in IM.
Thank you for your visit, and hope you bring your friends next time, so they can see and give me their opinion too.

“ABOUT THE ART

The style of this artwork is called Neo-Synthetism. It means that the artist uses personal symbolism to portray the subject matter.

This style is a combination of several different influences. Having been born in South Dakota, the first art that the artist saw were paintings done by Sioux artist Oscar Howe. Oscar painted in gouache (opaque watercolor) and he broke the drawing into separate sections and filled each one in with color. Dennis, however in his early years, drew from life or copying other artwork. Later after absorbing the life style of the late 60’s he began to draw his subject matter right out of his head. The influences grew to include art from the Middle East, China, Japan, traditional African art, India, Mexico, and various other native cultures. The work is also based heavily on some of the modern art styles of the time, poster art from the 60’s, Op Art along with Abstract Expressionism, and various forms of classical painting. All of these are combined in an original style.

The media used is gouache on watercolor paper and acrylics on canvas for the paintings. He later picked up the use of a new media, gemstones, as well as various other rocks, and minerals. The style remains the same only the media varies. The gouache and gemstone pieces tend to be small, whereas the acrylic paintings can be much larger. In the future, do to modern technology; the gemstone pieces can be cut by a water jet in far less time and allow for an increase in the size of the artwork.

The artist draws the cartoon on the surface and then numbers many of the sections to keep track of the color modulation. The first image of an American gemstone mosaic he saw actually was copied from a “Color by Number” kit, the kind used by children. The artist conveys what he wants to express by the use of lots of color variations and simple geometrical design.

In this exhibition are samples of the range and diversity of both media and subject. The artwork is placed in chronological order.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Dennis Paul Batt was born on April 20, 1952 in Woonsocket, South Dakota. His family moved to Massachusetts during his youth. He started creating art at the age of three and continued throughout his childhood. After graduating High School in 1969 he traveled around the country and then abroad. A year of living in Istanbul, Turkey imbued him with a sense of universal harmony. There he started painting and developed an original style using complex geometric patterns to represent natural objects. Dennis began painting in tempera but soon worked primarily in gouache.

During most of his stay in Istanbul in 1971 he painted almost one painting every day to learn his craft and experiment with ideas. Within this exhibition are several examples of those early years. He gave away dozens of these paintings to his friends and family. He then moved onto Boston, Massachusetts where he began his formal art education.

Dennis attended the Museum School of Fine Arts, Boston. He painted during the day and attended classes at night. After leaving school he went on to exhibit in several one-person, invitational, and juried exhibitions throughout the greater Boston area. Several paintings produced during this time are shown here.

In February of 1976 Dennis noticed a “Lapidary Journal” with a commesso (intarsia) on the cover. He immediately saw a style similar to his own and realized that stone was an ideal media for him. He then left Boston in June 1976 and moved to San Diego, California where coincidently both his family and the “Lapidary Journal” were located.

For 18 years while working as a commercial artist Dennis collected articles on commessi. He got to meet William Grundke in 1984 at the Pacifica Gem Show in Long Beach, California, where he saw his first commesso; William’s magnificent “Silent Night”. In 1994 at the local Vista Gem Show Dennis met William’s son, Conrad Grundke and saw his beautiful artwork. Conrad invited him to attend the Saddleback Community College Emeritus Lapidary class where he taught Dennis how to make commessi.

With the assistance of hundreds of lapidaries and their families, Dennis created a comprehensive database of stone-to-stone artwork called “American Masters of Stone.” The work was published on a CD and distributed to hundreds of Art Libraries throughout the continent. The purpose of this work is to introduce lapidary as a fine art. A few years later, with the help of Conrad Grundke, this project evolved into a new website featuring hundreds of artists and thousands of images, biographies, how-to articles, and commentary. The site is www.americanmastersofstone.com. In 2005 Dennis was inducted into the National Rockhound & Lapidary Hall of Fame in the Lapidary division.

His paintings have been sold to many national and international collectors in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, New Haven, Providence, San Francisco, Chicago, Istanbul, etc. Now Dennis has added the Commesso di pietre dure e tenere to his repertoire.

Dennis is a Past-President of the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild and a former trustee of the San Diego Museum of Art. He is the author of “The Living History of the Guild” and was the creator of and contributor to a cutting-edge online magazine called the Artists Ezine.

Now a long-term resident of Carlsbad, California, he is currently the co-managing trustee of the Outdoor Art Foundation. He also serves on the boards of COFAC (Consejo Fronterizo de Arte y Cultura – Border Council of Arts & Culture) and the Synergy Art Foundation. Dennis works with the committees of the San Diego Visual Arts Network and Oceanside Museum of Art Artists Alliance. He is the founder and web-person for the San Diego Visual Artists Guild, and aided in the creation of a cooperative artist gallery in downtown San Diego (1098 9th Ave.) called the SDVAG Fine Art Gallery. Dennis also is the founder and the executive director of a charitable organization called, the Museum Artists Foundation (MAF).

As director of MAF, in accordance with its policy of sharing with other organizations, presented an elegant fundraiser called “Façade” in conjunction with the Small Opera of San Diego on May 21, 2005. He helped create and designed a multi-phased curated Wildlife Art Exhibition & Sale, which was open to all regional artists, in the San Diego Natural History Museum, Balboa Park, dates August 12, 2005 – January 1, 2006.

Recently he assisted in the creation of two Carlsbad Masquerades, held on February 25, 2006 and February 24, 2007, to benefit the Outdoor Art Foundation’s Outdoor Art Initiative. He also partnered with Doctors Offering Charitable Services (DOCS) to create “The Unveiling” an Art and Opera fundraiser held on May 19, 2007. He created and keeps current a comprehensive database of over 2,800 regional visual artists including 2,000 email addresses. This database has been shared with several organizations looking for artists to donate work or enter exhibitions. It is growing, kept current, and is made available on request for museums and qualified art organizations.

In January 2007 Dennis launched a new business venture called Virtual Fine Art. He is the owner and President of the company, which features a 3D Interactive Virtual Art Museum. Dennis recently became a member of the executive steering committee for a local think tank, Imagine Carlsbad. In May 2007 Dennis was invited to join the San Diego Group Leaders, a multi-organizational networking group of professionals and leaders of various charitable organizations. He was then put on the Campbell Networks with his own events list, which provides information on events for artists, fans of art and those who wish to support the arts, primarily those with an interest in the visual and performing arts.

Since then, Dennis assisted Martin E. Petersen, curator emeritus of the San Diego Museum of Art to publish his manuscript called “Alice Klauber” online. He also has become the curator of a new art gallery, part of the New Village Arts Theater, in Carlsbad.

EXCERPTS FROM REVIEWS

Senator Edward Brooke (R. Mass.) 2/5/74 “Dennis Paul Batt’s bold exciting ‘Vibrations’ bespeaks a powerful, original artist at work”.

Richard Dymond “New England Business Journal” 6/25/74 “These paintings are poly-chromatic: colors laid side by side in flawlessly engineered geometric configurations… The individual patches of color seem to vibrate like the strings of a harp trembling long after the last chord has become audible”.

Mary Lou Kelly “Christian Science Monitor” 5/18/76 “His most distinctive compositions are horizontal rows signifying land, water, and sky, each decorated with repeated details such as mountains, waves, and clouds, often garnished with one or more figures”.

Richard Reilly “The San Diego Union” 3/27/77 “Gouache is a difficult technique, but one that is particularly suited to the work of Dennis Batt, for his compositions draw one’s attentions to the freshness and lightness of ‘things’… all creating a unique harmony of colors, rendered with the artist’s own stylization”.

Jan Jennings “The San Diego Evening Tribune” 1/19/79 “Dennis Batt plays with a myriad of disciplines in visual expression… Particularly impressive are his renderings of interiors where he juggles the inspirations of Picasso, Pollock, and Vaserely, as well as primitive influence and comes up with strong compositions, which invite eye movement all over the canvas… he fuses a variety of artistic approaches, he is also cunning enough to blend them skillfully and gracefully… In each of Batt’s paintings there is precision and color modulation”.

Dear readers, the CM Gallery, clarifies some situations that happens in the artistic community in Second Life, not that we wanted to give importance to certain issues because we feel that they have not so much relevance, however, the dedicated readers of this blog deserve a clarification on our part. Feeling that this is a post that beyond the purpose of the blog, the CM Gallery, does not stop to explain what happened. During the exibition of Violetta Biziou, when we first meet Zephyru Zapedzki, he don’t went to the gallery to see the work of the artist but to self-advertise in open chat without previously greet someone, much less the artist or the owner of the gallery. From here, we can formulate an idea of the Zephyru character.

Meanwhile the CM Gallery was contacted by a person, which promoted the artist (Zephyru), which proposed the exposure it in the gallery, so through an act of good faith, we accepted. However, the gallery was closed for change of location, when the new gallery was ready we contact Zephyru and another artist Jayalli Hawthorne, to express their work (during the period that the gallery was closed we still advertise the artist through the blog). In a first reaction, Zephyru, proved to be very helpful and nice. As soon as it was assigned the space for its work, its conduct changed dramatically (for those who do not know the gallery, it is divided into three levels, Zephyru was in the first, where people entering the gallery, is the first image of the gallery). Despite this, Zephyru showed displeasure about their space, however the Jayalli had its exhibition mounted.

The following day, Zephyru addressed in a “arrogant” way to both owners of the gallery, saying that the paintings of oil Jayalli were false and mere photographs of the internet processed by software, using a similar effect of oil to convert the photo in a painting. Zephyru, argues with mere speculation and say that leave the gallery and their works because he’s next to a “Fake artist” (their words). After a meeting between the owners of the gallery and previously confront Jayalli, and she said that paintings were real we decided that without sufficient evidence we couldn’t take a position for any of the artists, however, we respost Zephyru’s position without any opposition, respecting its pointing.Unfortunately, after the Zephyru know this decision, his not limited to withdraw their works but he starting to seek evidence to support their argument. After several attempts presentation of evidence (which not passed from mere speculation), including disturbing jayalli with another avatar trying to take him information by force, which could not, even then did not hesitate to send the conversation to owners of the gallery (to us, a profound lack of character and an extreme cowardice). Even after Jayalli having submitted photos witch prove the veracity of his paintings in oil, Zephyru decide ultimate the owners of the gallery to take a position for or against it “if you are not me, then they are against me!”

Thus begins of the quest “against the fake artists,” which is characterized by abusive notices in groups of Art accompanied by notecards to defame both, the artist jayalli and the own gallery. This attempt to give a bad name to the gallery and the artist Jayalli, can only have one interpretation, in our opinion, an frustrated attempt to self promotion and by a childness act. With the “open war” to the gallery by Zephyru, even after Jayalli feelling extremely offended and humiliated, and runing the risk of undermining the exclusivity of their paintings in the RL, send us more photos of their work that were no doubt that it is authentic works and not attempts to forge art. The CM Gallery, knowing what Jayalli‘s happening and may suffer will not publish any of these images, however, as we had said, our readers deserve to know the truth, and we focus that at no time was used other suport of comunication in Second Life by CM Gallery contrarily to Zephyru, to defend or attack this one.

We want to leave now the impartiality side for a moment, and analyze the situation, we have self-conscience that we never acted incorrectly, with bouth parts, just (although we are portugueses as Zephyru is); we just decided only be impartial, what to Zephyru is an affront and shows a lack of intellectual ability (though Caty Matova is licensed in Art History and ScorpionSoul Paine is Designer), even after being shown for the owners of the gallery and to be said that the works are authentic to Zephyru’s, it continues its demand. We all know that 90% of SL artists expose false art (question: scanning a paiting is already tamper an artistic work?). We know that art is an expression and creativity, we know that the monetary value assigned to art in the SL is infinitely lower to the RL, why Zephyru chose to Jayalli to label as “Fake Artist”? And a gallery run by people linked to the area? By the way, why do you pick someone, instead yourself?

In way of conclusion, the blog and the gallery, CM Gallery, has since its beginning the purpose of gathering the Artists in the SL (whatever the term of the Art) and add a community artists, we regret greatly that in our quest of this objective, we chose this artist who goes against this principles, ignoring all the facts and dont caring about ruining the artist career in SL to win reputation. So we give our apologies…

Caty & Scorp

What bring you to sl?
I was working on a virtual art gallery simultaneously to SL’s development and when I heard of SL I decided to pursue art in this format.

What turn you to expose in sl?
I show my own art work but also am able to show RL artists’ work here too and bring some of them into SL.

How you discribe your art?
My style is a combination of several different influences.

What kind of materials do you use in you art?
Currently using gem materials but have created paintings in gouache and acrylic.

Do you insert in some kind of Artistic movement?
Called Neo-Synthetism, which means that the artist uses personal symbolism to portray the subject matter.

what were your steps in sl?
First spent over a month in orienting to the many opportunities in SL and learning about how to navigate and create objects.

Place that you expose, do you have a gallery? (if so where is located)
I do not have my own venue but am showing in about a dozen places. My exhibtions are in Small World Art Gallery, Gallery at Camazotz, Crossworlds Gallery, two venues of the S&S Gallery of Fine Art, and currently in Tricia Aferdita’s Gallery and Harmoney Cafe in Cetus, Gallery Zeusdinne, two venues for Soul Art, and in ONEART WORLD.

Are you an real life artist or just in SL?
Real life fulltime artist.

When you start painting?
At the age of 3, but professionally at 19.

Do you represent you real life art in SL?
Yes.

Do you have any kind of formation in artistic field in real life or you just paint because you like?
I am a fulltime artist and art activist, as well as art curator and artists agent in RL.

What your steps as an artist in real life?
See answer to last question or to my website.

How do you face the art in SL?
I very much enjoy seeing all the wonderful and creative work shown in SL, especially much of the work created in SL.

Do you think that SL artists face difficulties? If so, what kind?
At this time I am too young in SL to answer.

What do you think that should be change in this world of art in SL? What kind of proposals woud you do?
I have not been here long enough to be qualified to insert my opion into the local art community as far as changing it.

Do you have plans for your future art in SL?
To work with the SL gallery owners and assist them as they see fit.

Do you have a blog, e-mail or page? Or do you what to leave a contact so the people can find you?
I can be reached through my RL website: http://www.dennispaulbatt.com.

Do you think this interview will help another artists? Or what can bring to them?
Yes

Are you free to make exibitions in rl?
Sometimes during special events, etc. However, I usually represent only our local San Diego/Baja Norte artists.

How can people contact you?
MarkMonet Thor

Age in sl:
Born in 2/10/2008

Where are you from in rl?
Western United States.

What bring you to sl?
My art and the opportunities in SL. And the excitement of the place.

What turn you to expose in sl?
Because I love beauty and want to share my attempts at it. And 2, I want to educate people about the ugliness also–what you saw in The Gallery II.

How you discribe your art?
It is impressionistic and realistic–impressionorealism.

What kind of materials do you use in you art?
oil, pastel, pencil and digital, all combined usually.

Do you insert in some kind of Artistic movement?
No for art. But I am part of a movement for democratic freedom, including the freedom to pursue art in any form.

What were your steps in sl? Place that you expose, do you have a gallery? (if so where is located, can you give the slurl?)
I have two galleries HTTP://SLURL.COM/SECONDLIFE/REIL/44/68/27
The other is HTTP://SLURL.COM/SECONDLIFE/REIL/55/38/26

Are you an real life artist or just in SL?
In RL art is secondary to my profession. But it is my profession in RL. But as to whether I am a true artists or not, you should jusstge that from my paintings.

When you start painting?
When I was a boy–and as a teenager, I went to the Cooper School or Art. And also took art in College.

Do you represent you real life art in SL?
The art I show in SL is the art I do in RL.

Do you have any kind of formation in artistic field in real life or you just painting because you like?
I have no gallery in RL. CAnnot afford it. But I paint because to represent the beauty I love in the world.

What do you think of art in SL?
Some is real good–the art here varies in quality as it does in the real world. I have only seen about 10-15 galleries so far, and intend to see them all. I appreciate that creativit and expression in so much of the art I see, whether modern or conventional, or traditional

Do you think that SL artists face difficulties? If so, what kind?
Yes. If they wish to sell their art, there is much competition. And also, most who come into SL are here for the fun–and there is so much ot it. So it there is not too much interest in art.

What do you think that should be change in this world of art in SL? What kind of proposals would you do?
I am still too new to SL and its art world to say. That would be presumptious of me.

Do you have plans for your future art in SL?
Yes, which is what I am doing. Developing my The Gallery, and bringing attention to what is in The Gallery II.

Do you have a blog, e-mail or page? Or do you what to leave a contact so the people can find you?
I have a blog at http://markmonet.blogspot.com/. Anc IM me in SL–I get it as email and can respond. My email is markmonet@gmail.com

Do you think this interview will help another artists? Or what can bring to them?
I don’t know. I would like to help if I can, but don’t know how I am so new. I can talk about art and how I do it, but each artist will have their own approach.

Are you free to make exibitions in rl? How can people contact you?
Depends on when and where–contact me. Conact by email markmonet@gmail.com

Please leave a phrase to the public that will read your interview:
“Life is full of beauty and also ugliness. To appreciate one is to see the other. My phrase: Beauty is forever.”
